With a never ending curiosity of how things work, both electrical and mechanical, Sean made his way into the technology world at a young age. He spent over 15 years working in the security, life safety, and building controls industry with a constant hunger to learn everything he could. He worked as a government contractor early in his career and then made his way to Siemens and Convergint Technologies. During his career, he developed a passion for creating new standards and procedures for almost everything he worked on as he was always wanting to improve the engineering behind it. Over the course of his career, Sean developed a passion for the safety and well being of others. He knew immediately that he wanted to change lives one day with the power of technology.
" Creating something out of nothing is exciting, but not as exciting as when what you created can change someone's life forever!"
As an individual who has a lifelong passion for innovation, Christopher has spent almost 20 years building armored vehicles for various government applications and agencies. He has worked for respected and proven companies such as Square One Armoring, Protection Devices, Inc and The O'Gara Group. His key role and extensive years as a Director of Operations has brought an unsurmountable wealth of knowledge to his already vast arsenal of skills and patterns of critical thinking. He has been the head of Research and Development, often pioneering designs that would become a standard in the armoring community. He has owned metal fabrication businesses and has a passion for building new and innovative products as he is never satisfied with normalcy and the continuation of out-dated thought processes.
- "Thinking outside of the box is the only way to create something new and exciting. Breaking through boundaries and fusing ideas that have never been created before is what drives my ambition and success. I don't want you to like what I have created, I want you to love it!"
Amalfi Park. It wasn't just a dot on a map, it was a place where dreams were born. In the winter of 2013, two families would make a decision to each buy a home on the same cul-de-sac. Both having newborns of similar ages, the two families quickly became friends. Sharing baby stories and hanging out until the late hours of the night, the close bond between neighbors grew stronger with each passing day. After a few years and a few more children, they became the best of friends with a trust that most families would be jealous of.
After work, nights were usually filled with children playing together in the cul-de-sac while the parents huddled together on lawn chairs in the driveway, drinking, eating and laughing at the stories of years past and the new ones they were creating together. One night, Christopher and Sean decided to hang out a little longer to finish up their last round of drinks while the rest of the families scurried inside to clean up and head to bed on a typical school night. While the two men joked and laughed, the conversation turned to the subject of great ideas. Ideas that we all seem to think at one time or another, are a golden ticket to a better world and a better life. As the two pondered on the success of Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg, a concept began to form as the two bounced ideas off each another. "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if the whole house lit up during a power outage?" Sparks began to fly as the other responded, "Absolutely! And something that would charge my phone at the same time would be amazing too!" A few more 'what if's' and they both paused, then stared at each other for a second. Then, the next seven words that would be spoken, would change their lives forever. "Ya know, we could totally do this."
Within a week, Knight Vision was officially the name and shortly after, large amounts of coffee began fueling the late night creativity between the two friends. Over the next few months, the excitement was indescribable as they worked around the clock brainstorming and building what would be the very first prototype of its kind. It was simple, effective and did the job well. The unit would be mounted on the wall in the garage and when the lights were off, it would glow brilliantly on the wall like a beacon standing guard as it waited in standby mode for the next power outage to hit the home. Then, it would spring into action, illuminating its own strategically placed lights throughout the interior of the home. They had done it! It was no longer an idea or concept in their heads, it was now a complete, physical product operating before their very eyes and it was amazing! Now for celebration on a job well done and testing.
Though proud of what they had accomplished together in such a short amount of time, they quickly realized that they needed to expand on the model. After testing for a few weeks, both men concluded that the unit was limited in its versatility. It didn't offer some of the basic features a family might want in order to find it desirable in their home. They knew the concept and fundamental operation of the unit was solid but it was lacking simple features like being able to independently operate lights during a power outage. Different rooms would need to be turned on or off in the event children had to sleep while parents wanted to stay up. In addition, the system needed to automatically detect whether or not it was daytime so it did not operate while daylight was present in the home. A controller would have to be created and accessible for customers to easily operate the system.
They broke through some of the limitations and created a controller that would mount in the wall to work in tandem with the main power system. Centrally located in the home, the controller was built with standard wall switches and buttons in an enclosed cabinet that would have a hinged door to keep young children from playing with it. A lot of design and prototyping went into the controller. The two partners wanted it to be aesthetically pleasing as much as it was functional. The concept was for the controller to be a blank, white media cabinet that would blend into the home's interior design when not being used but when in action, during a power outage, it would light up and have all the appeal of a state of the art center piece in the home.
"We really, REALLY loved the design of the first controller..."
After putting so much time, design and effort into the new controller, it was becoming apparent to the partners that it was just a little too big to be appealing. "When we finished the first controller, we were both so proud of it. It looked amazing and functioned exactly how we had envisioned. But after a few "reveals" with close friends and family, everyone had the same response. 'WOW! I love the concept and it looks amazing but... Can you guys make the controller just a little bit smaller?" As heartbreaking as it was to the men, they knew something had to change. After months of research and development they had invested, the time had come to let it go. "I remember discussing it with each other and coming to the realization that we had to abandon this design of the controller. Both of our stomachs were sick and we just didn't want to let it go but we knew it was the most logical thing to do in order to move forward." They packed it in a box, looked back one more time and decided then and there that they were going to design a controller that people would absolutely fall in love with.
The idea was simple. Make the best looking LCD touchscreen keypad that anyone had ever seen! From the start, it was a tall order to fill. Both Christopher and Sean had hand picked every single part of the previous prototypes and this time would be no different. With both of them personally bankrolling the project from the very beginning, they wanted to make sure that every decision was based on quality, performance and longevity. "At this stage, we couldn't afford to make any mistakes. We went the extra mile and invested countless late hours well into the night to make sure that we were doing everything right." They put their heads together and their abilities on the table and started to create something amazing. From personally creating patterns and designs that would be CNC laser cut and formed, 3D printed in their own homes and professionally powder coated for top quality, to learning thousands of lines of custom coding. There was nothing that was going to stop them from achieving their goals. They knew from the start that nothing like this had ever existed before and they wanted it to be perfect when it rolled out into the market. With the installation designs complete and the basic code written, it was time for some critical thinking to make sure that no feature or option was missing or overlooked.
"We ran through every scenario in our heads, with our friends and with our families. We had to be sure that nothing was missed. And I think we accomplished what we set out to do right from the beginning. From burglars to fires, key fobs to night lights, and charging stations to outside mood lighting that immediately turns into a beacon for emergency vehicles. We thought of everything." Yes they did. And not only did they decide to add these features to the system, they decided that all of the features should be included as a standard in all of their packages. But what's the reason for it? As a company, wouldn't it be better to make each feature a chargeable upgrade?...
-"How do you not make safety a standard? How do you tell a single mother barely surviving that she can't afford the extra protection for her children? Protection like immediate lighting inside and outside of the home during a fire or a burglary. Or that she doesn't make enough money like the family across the street to own a remote crisis button in case of an emergency. That is not our vision. That's not Knight Vision and that's definitely not going to make this world a better place. The only upgrades we offer to customers are MORE zones and MORE lighting but ALL of the features we have created are standard in all of our packages."
Knight Vision Systems started as just an idea between two friends. An idea that became a vision and a drive to make families safer and homes more secure. It wasn't by any means easy or simple but it was worth every bit of the journey. And in the end, they succeeded in what they had set out to build. Together, they created a system that could very well become a standard in every home, apartment and business. With safety at the forefront of their design, there isn't a single person that wouldn't benefit from having a Knight Vision System. More protection for my family and loved ones? Yes please! And its not going to stop there. Designs and plans are already in the works for more features, more safety and even a network between system owners that will expand beyond the boarders of your own neighborhood. Just wait, it's coming...
